Time to Celebrate

January 25th, 2010

Tower 23 needed some help with a last minute anniversary order when they discovered their original supplier was suddenly unavailable. With enthusiastic determination we whipped up this beauty for a next day pick up. The couple was celebrating their 25th anniversary and confessed a love of Bordeaux, so it made perfect sense to chose the classic 1984 label from Chateau Mouton Rothschild – super colorful and fun – and made a Jeroboam (3-liter) sized cake out of our Blackout Chocolate Cake with Rich Raspberry and Belgian Chocolate Ganache filling and Italian Butter Cream.  Super YUM!

Our Fine Friends in the Industry

July 16th, 2009
This month, we are featuring some of our favorite friends in the wedding industry!

Wedding Photographers

Laura Christin Batisfore :: Laura Christin Photography

Laura is not only a darling person and beautiful woman inside & out, but she is truly one of the finest photographers we’ve ever had shoot our cakes. She has an awesome knack for angles and moments, and we could not be more blessed to have her so inspired by our cakes…Yeah, Laura!

Kyle & Kaiya Karges :: San Diego High Definition Weddings

Kyle is our newest buddy from Weddings of Distinction and a real character. His team filmed us at work and put together just the coolest little vimeo video for us, showing a particularly heavy Red Velvet cake day. Yum!

Catering

Lisa Gossmann, Sales Manager :: Behind the Scenes

We love Lisa, what a gem! She operates sales at one of the world’s largest scale catering companies, located right here in San Diego. Kick-ass worker, super organized manager, and rockin’ mom she is.

Chef Scotty Wagner, Executive Chef & Owner :: Chile Co. Catering

How does one even begin to describe Scotty’s talent, charisma, and creativity? He rocks! We loved creating his sister’s wedding cake and have almost always managed to sneak a snack of his fresh, organic styles whenever possible – so delish.

Jay Miller & Donna Sly :: Creative Catering

Offering the best value we’ve seen in catering, Jay & Donna are a fantastic team effort. Their food is delicious, fresh, and affordable – a combination not easily found these days.

Event Coordinators

Heather Balliet, Owner :: Amorology Weddings

Damn, these Amorology weddings are amazing! Heather’s whole family gets involved, from building décor to florals to designing an incredible stage of wedding bliss. She is the vision of grace and cool, such an organized coordinator; it is our good fortune that she found us as a cake company.

Rachel Welland, Owner & Coordinator :: Bliss Events

Congratulations on Rachel’s own honeymooning this year! Rachel and her team throw a serious party with every dotted ‘i’ and crossed ‘t’ to perfection. We know that any wedding Bliss Event organizes will be smooth as silk.

Entertainment

Andy Hagenah, Owner :: Disc Go Round DJ & Video Services

Super cool, Andy is so calm, collected and professional. We think he’s so great; Donna even hired him for her own wedding. What a fun night he gave her & Nick!

Merrylin Brichmann, Disc Jockey & Emcee :: Artistic Productions

Rock it, Sister! Merrylin is so cool, the perfect party animal DJ – electric energy and fabulous dance music. We think she’s one of the most fun people in the biz…

Florist / Hair & Make-Up

Dawn Stone :: Embellishmint – Floral and Event Design Studio

Gorgeous flowers, insanely cool design technique, such an amazing touch with elegance coupled with creativity, Dawn and her team are true artists. With a little help from Maximus (see “Paws & Smell the Roses” blog), her talents bring every event such beauty, it brings tears to the eyes…

Ellie :: A New Twist Hair and Makeup

There are not many make-up artists around who have such a delicate hand and the ability to make brides look so radiant. Ellie is fantastic and just a funny, delightful character to make the last minute beauty details that much less stressful.

Locations & Honeymoons

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe

Wow! If you have not seen this property, you have not felt the essence of Southern CA. This is Mediterranean luxury with a rustic touch, engulfed by blossoming roses and lush green lawns. Chef John cooks up fresh, delectable foods, Marianna runs her events with class and perfection, and the service team provides seamless grace.

The Bahia Hotel

If you want a great value at an Oceanside property (or even ON-OCEAN site), talk to Tracey Amernick and the Bahia team. Choose between 2 super fun bay cruisers or multiple event rooms for the party. Ceremonies on the beach segue into relaxed, let-your-hair-down fun!

Susan Ashley-Howell, Owner & Consultant :: Romantic Travel

Susan will take care of everything to save you the nonsense of booking your honeymoon while you should be planning your wedding. She’ll make sure you hear about all the cool things to do while you’re away and help save you $$$ to enjoy the romance as well as adventure on this glorious dream vacation.

Fine Paper & Packaging

Elizabeth A. Seaton, Owner & Paper Stylist :: Posh Paperie

Posh Paperie makes unique, individual invitations and cards for your event. Everything is so hand-crafted, we are always so impressed by their artistic abilities, even as designers ourselves. These girls will go out of their way to make your invitations so impressive, your guests will want to keep them to frame.

Lola Chaney :: West Coast Print Brokers

Probably the coolest lady we’ve met this year, Lola has proven herself over & over again with professionalism, speed, efficiency, and results in printing. She finds the best deals, turns around the product faster than we can keep up with our answering machine, and still has the best come-backs to any joke I could ever tell. We think she’s the $%#@! Go Lolita!

Sculpted Cakes!

July 15th, 2009
Good afternoon from the ladies at Sweet Cheeks Baking Company! Admittedly, it has been awhile since we stopped by to say hello, but we hope you can feast your eyes upon some new sculpted cakes we have created so far this year. And trust me, they ARE good enough to eat!
:: This first cake was a real treat. We received a call from a young man who wanted to surprise his fiance with a birthday cake. She was coming home from having just graduated from UGA. He told us she really liked turtles, so we decided to make a cake in the shape of a turtle and have him holding a flag of the UGA mascot, the bulldog. This guy, a box turtle shape, made our day!

:: We created this salad bowl cake for the “Top Chef” Salad Competition event for NACE (National Association for Catering Executives, http://nace.net/) at nearby Specialty Produce from a couple of weeks ago. It was a huge hit! People just couldn’t believe it was really cake (table cloth, lettuce, veggies, and everything – all edible sugar or cake; kumquats and edible flowers were all organic from local San Diego farms). We even had tiny black ants crawling up the side of the table…all part of the outdoor effect.

:: Another really fun project we had the pleasure to work on as of late was for our friends over at Joes on the Nose coffee ! They were celebrating their 2 year birthday of the famous orange truck, so what else would we do but make a cake in the shape of their beloved mobile coffee station? Photos by Laura Christin Photography

:: Our very own Design Goddess Charity George really outdid herself with this next cake. This cake, in the shape and likeness of a dream Porsche for a groom of ours, was sure to be a highlight at this particular couples’ reception. Photos by Laura Christin Photography

:: One of our most vivacious clients, Juicy TaTa, came to us to make her an amazing and delicious Baby Shower cake. The detailing and care that went into creating the fondant pieces on this cake made it extraordinary. She told us that she saved the figurine of the body after so many guests commented on how much it resembled her sleek, albeit pregnant, body! Go Girl! Photos by Laura Christin Photography
:: A man and his best friend. For our next cake, the client wanted to give her brother a cake with sentiment. The cake was made in the likeness of his best friend, his golden retriever. This pup made quite an uproar at the celebration. Guests at the restaurant that were strangers to the birthday boy came over and were making bets on what part of the dog they would cut off first. In the end, the golden retriever’s nose got the boot first.

Mount Woodson Castle

August 30th, 2008

The grandeur of the Mt. Woodson castle demands a grand spectacle of cake.  How much fun this cake was to produce for this beautiful couple!  Elegantly accented with rose petals, this 4-tier lovely nearly fills its 21″ wide silver stand…yes, it was a big cake.  Vanilla chiffon cake with fresh raspberries & cream and our delicately sinful Belgian Chocolate-Whipped.  Yum!

Deep, red roses, by the ever-so-lovely Carmin Cermak of Carmin Design, accented the layers.  (Carmin, by the way, is currently having her baby – we can’t wait to see this gorgeous little girl!!!)

Fabulous photos were taken by Maryanne McGuire Photography – she rocks!  http://www.maryannephoto.com
We had so much fun meeting her (another NY transplant from Brooklyn – she & Michael were two peas in a pod) that we hired her to take the shots of our Chewy Chocolate Cheeks and Cheebee’s Best Carrot Cake for the our shopping cart.
See them at http://www.sweetcheeksbakingshop.com/servlet/StoreFront

Best wishes to Daena & Oliver in their first year of marital bliss!

The other San Diego companies featured were also awesome, especially Russ at Carlsbad Gourmet, who instantly bonded with us.  Such a great guy, I call him a marketing wizard.  Check out his products for sure, and use them as an ingredient for so many dishes – I mix his Stone Brewing Curried Mustard Grilling Sauce with coconut oil and Vietnamese sweet chili sauce for my fish…uh, delish?  I think so!
